Three reliable ways to make great coffee at home, from the simplest to the most technical.
Pour-Over
What You'll Need:
- Pour-over dripper (V60 or Chemex)
- Paper filter
- Freshly ground coffee, medium-fine
- Gooseneck kettle
- Digital scale
Steps:
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water to remove papery taste.
- Add 20g of ground coffee to the filter.
- Pour just enough water to saturate the grounds and wait 30 seconds for the bloom.
- Slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion over 2–3 minutes.
- Let it fully drain, then serve immediately.
French Press
What You'll Need:
- French press
- Coarsely ground coffee
- Kettle
- Timer
Steps:
- Add coarse coffee grounds to the empty press.
- Pour hot water evenly over the grounds and stir gently.
- Place the lid on top without pressing down, and steep for 4 minutes.
- Press the plunger down slowly and evenly.
- Pour immediately to avoid over-extraction.
Espresso
What You'll Need:
- Espresso machine
- Fine, evenly ground coffee
- Tamper
- Digital scale
Steps:
- Dose 18g of finely ground coffee into the portafilter.
- Tamp evenly with firm, level pressure.
- Lock the portafilter in and start the shot immediately.
- Aim for a 25–30 second extraction time.
- Stop the shot once you reach roughly double the dry weight in liquid.
